The Janet Zakos Foundation offers scholarships for Doctoral candidates in Byzantine History of Byzantine Archaeology of the faculty of History and Archaeology of the University of Athens.
Eligible are doctoral candidates in Byzantine History or Byzantine Archaeology of the Department of History and Archaeology of the University of Athens.
The amount is disbursed in two instalments. The second instalment is paid after the submission of a Progress Report with supporting evidence to the Graduate Committee, signed by the student and his/her supervisor.
Criteria for selection of candidates:
1. Academic record of the Master's course
2. Financial standing
Required documents:
1. Application
2. Copy of Master's degree certificate
3. Transcript of the Master's courses
4. Curriculum vitae
5. Two letters of recommendation in a sealed envelope.
6. Solemn statement of law 1599/86 that the applicant does not receive a scholarship from any other public or private institution at the same time.
7. Income tax statement of the applicant or, failing that, of his / her parents
8. Cover letter (350 words) including the content, the objective and the course of the research

The beneficiaries of the Janet Zakos scholarship, doctoral candidates of the Department of History and Archaeology of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.
The first announcement of the scholarship took place in 2011.
In 2012, the scholarship was awarded to Mr. Vassileios Korosis, now chancellor of the Monastery of Zichna and Nevrokopi. Father Korosis continues to work on his doctoral thesis. He has also published several papers in international journals and has delivered lectures and made scientific contributions at conferences in Greece and abroad.
The 2013 scholarship was awarded to Ms. Marilia Lykaki. Ms. Lykaki completed her doctoral dissertation and was awarded her Ph.D. in March 2016. She has participated in numerous Greek and international scientific conferences, presenting a wide range of scholarly contributions. In addition, she was selected to teach a semester-long course at the Ionian University (Corfu) during the winter semester of 2016/17. In September 2025, Ms. Lykaki was elected Assistant Professor in the Department of History and Archeology at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.
The 2015 scholarship was awarded to Ms. Vassiliki Klotsa. Ms. Klotsa continues to work on her doctoral dissertation. In addition, she has been employed on short-term contracts in archaeological excavations conducted by the Ministry of Culture. She has also contributed to a project focused on the digital promotion of castles in Argolida, Arkadia and Corinthia. Moreover, she participated in the catalogue of the Exhibition “Heaven and Earth" organised by the Ministry of Culture in collaboration with the Benaki Museum and held in the United States (Washington, D.C.).
The 2016 scholarship was awarded to Ms. Konstantina Varela. Ms. Varela continues to work on her doctoral dissertation. She has participated in local and international conferences, presenting a range of scholarly contributions. In addition, she has taken part in European programs at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens as a scientific specialist (Philologist – Historian), as well as in research programs of the Department of History at the same institution.
The 2017 scholarship was awarded to Ms. Vassiliki Pavlakaki. Ms. Pavlakaki completed her doctoral dissertation and was awarded her Ph.D. degree in December 2020 "With Honours". Ms. Pavlakaki has since published her doctoral dissertation and is currently employed as a secondary education teacher.
The 2018 scholarship was awarded to Ms. Efrosyni Avgerinou Ms. Avgerinou completed her doctoral dissertation and was awarded her PhD in March 2023.
The 2019 scholarship was awarded to Ms. Irene Politi, Mr. Panagiotis-Christos Tsakardanos and Mr. Stylianos Oikonomou. Ms. Politi completed her doctoral dissertation and was awarded her PhD in March 2023. Mr. Tsakardanos completed his master’s degree in June 2021 and Mr. Oikonomou is expected to complete his doctoral dissertation in January 2025.
The 2021 scholarship was awarded to Ms. Elli Evangelia Bia, Mr. Sotirios Seklos and Mr. Marios-Costantinos Ioannou. Ms. Bia completed her PhD dissertation in September 2023. She has actively participated to the publication of the 12th Congress AIECM3 on Medieval and Modern Period Mediterranean Ceramics Proceedings (NHRF Research Series 10, Athens 2021) as a member of the editorial Committee and worked as a teaching assistant at the Department of Archeology and the History of Art. Mr. Seklos completed his Master thesis in February 2023. He participated in two excavation campaigns (Delphi, French School of Archeology at Athens and Piazza Armerina, Sicily, Università degli Studi di Bologna). Mr. Ioannou completed his doctoral dissertation “With Honours” in February 2024.
In 2023, the scholarship was awarded to Mr. Vasilios Chrysanthakopoulos, Ms. Paraskevi Mavridi and Mr. Rafail-Thomas Pallantzas.
In 2024, the scholarship was awarded to Mr. Evangelos Papaioannou, Mr. Manos Tsikourakis, and Mr. Demetrios Theodorou.
